Sometimes, brain metastases are found when breast cancer is first diagnosed, but the majority of the time, brain metastases occur as a distant recurrence of an early-stage breast cancer that was treated in the past.
Overall, brain metastases occur in 15% to 24% of women with metastatic breast cancer. As survival improves, however, this number is expected to increase.
